Jean-Pierre Challet has been a happy chef for the past 30 years and, more recently, has earned the stripe of professional sommelier. He feels that food and wine are inexorably linked and to truly give his guest a wonderfully memorable dining experience he must understand and engage both.
With his deep love for all things related to French cuisine, it is no surprise that he has also become recognized as one of the premier producers of French-inspired, hand-crafted breads and pastries in Toronto. Only the finest products go into crafting his delicious, authentic daily essentials and indulgences available at his welcoming Leslieville shop, Le Matin.
JP was born and raised in Lyon, the gastronomic heart of France where his love & respect for food was borne. He studied culinary arts at the respected École Hotelière in Nice before migrating to Canada where, over time, he has evolved into one of Toronto’s most respected & beloved chefs.
The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Gourmet and a host of Canadian publications including our own Toronto Life have lavishly praised Chef Challet’s creative interpretation of French Cuisine.
Included in JP’s many proud accomplishments is his contribution to the development of the French Culinary Program at George Brown College in Toronto. He believes strongly in passing on the foundations of the tradition of excellence to the next generation of passionate cooks.
JP lectures frequently and appears regularly as a guest Chef on radio and TV.
“Challet’s style falls neatly between Leroy’s asceticism and Thuet’s flamboyance – suave, lucid, balancing finesse with clever references to a more workaday French cuisine. Taking over the lead in this long-running show, he brings his own personality to the part.”
